I can understand cats and dogs encountering hardship and needing homes, but llamas? Are you serious?
Yes, we’re serious. There are many horse refuges around the world, taking in thousands of abused, neglected abandoned or otherwise homeless horses. There are Donkey sanctuaries caring for an ever growing number of these beautiful animals who find themselves in need. Llamas and alpacas are much less common, but they are no less in need of help.
Every animal requires care unique to its species. It was never our intention to create a haven for llamas and alpacas in need; like most similar organizations, it started with one animal and just evolved from there.
Why Are Sanctuaries Necessary?
Marriage breakdown and family displacement, home repossession, illness, old age and death; these are the most common reasons that large animals suddenly find themselves in need of care. Unfortunately, many people just don’t think about or don’t want to think about what happens if they are no longer able to care for their beloved animals. Some do not consider the animals of importance and just set them loose in the forest. Others allow themselves to breakdown into emotional turmoil and don’t know what to do with animals they are no longer able to care for. That’s why we’re here; that’s why we do what we do. It’s not paid employment, it’s a labour of love, but once in a while the Sanctuary needs a bit more cashflow than we are able to generate ourselves. Right now is one of those occasions. Will you help us right now to erect a new barn for this winter? $10,000 is all it takes, but it’s more than we can manage ourselves. Please do what you can.
