Build Your Own Fiber Picker

The plans are available for immediate download and include additional photographs showing the picker in action.

The FAB Fiber Picker is the result of several years of design and experimentation.  We have built a range of picking machines, which are in daily use at Fibre Arts Bootcamp, for removing debris from the wool, for preparing fiber for combing or carding and for blending different types of fiber.

A simple yet versatile tool for conditioning fleece and fiber

Picking is not always necessary, but if you have a fleece that is full of vegetation that does not come out with washing or if the fleece clumps during the washing process, then picking is the perfect way to open it up and prepare it for carding or combing.  The vegetation that falls out of the fibre into the bottom of the picker is often startling!

These plans were a long time in the making, requiring a great deal of experimentation with many prototypes, but they are finally complete and ready for the do-it-yourselfers, who get a kick out of making their own equipment.  The purpose of creating this machine was to produce a highly flexible tool that could clean fibre by opening up clumps and mats, thereby allowing vegetation to drop out and leaving it ready to card or comb.  It also had to be adjustable to cope with all different types and qualities of fleece and fiber.  This is most fiber pickers fail.  They are designed for the ‘average’ fleece …whatever that might be.

The plans have been created using CAD (computer aided design) and include more than forty 3-dimensional images, showing you precisely how to build this machine yourself and get the most from it.  The detailed documentation, contains clear instructions for building the picker together with useful tips to ensure it serves you well.

The build-your-own fiber picker package contains no fewer than thirty eight detailed drawings, plus many close up photographs, as well as a detailed description of the various parts and their attributes.

This fibre picker is capable of handling dense fleece or fine open fiber, but the amount it can process at a time will vary considerably.  It requires practice to determine how much fleece can be put into the picker, without the float sticking or jumping.

These Detailed Plans Show How To Build Your Own fiber picking machine that will last you a lifetime …and more.

There’s only one thing stopping you from jumping in and building your own – and that’s fear!  Fear that you aren’t good enough to build it or fear that you don’t know how. With the Internet at your fingertips, there are thousands of people out there who willingly help others to achieve their goals. We live in the age of information, but it doesn’t mean we can’t still be manually creative.  Enjoy the journey of creativity, not just the result.
