The Refirmary Residents

as of August 8th, 2026

Moji

Moji profile image

Moji arrived in 2021 extremely malnourished and infested with mites.  Initially, she was very reluctant to engage with people, but following one heart-warming encounter with a young child, she has become a visitor favourite, allowing unlimited cuddles and contact.  She remains underweight and her hind legs are extremely weak and wobbly.  Whilst Moji is super-friendly with people, she can be quite obnoxious with some of the other residents, especially Chanelle.

Manna

Manna has been in The Llama Sanctuary since 2008

Manna has been in The Llama Sanctuary since 2008, longer than anyone else.  She has very sore legs and spends a lot of time laying on her side.  Do not be alarmed!  She has never been a touchy-feely kind of llama, but she does love food and she will happily accept carrots without raising her head from the ground.

Princess

Princess never had a house she could call her own.

Princess was mauled by a bear in 2020 and left untended in a field for several days before being surrendered to The Llama Sanctuary.  Her wounds have healed, but she has traumatic arthritis in the front right leg.  She never had a shelter before coming to The Sanctuary and prefers to spend her days sitting outside, come rain or shine.  You may be lucky to catch a glimpse of her as she steps indoors for a hay snack or spell in front of the fan.

MoonShadow

MoonShadow is the smiliest llama at The Llama Sanctuary

Oh MoonShadow!  What a fellow.  Seriously neglected, he was brought into Sanctuary care in 2023.  Only once his enormously overgrown coat was removed could we see the results of years of neglect on his body.  Moonie has a serious tooth problem which results in him ‘quidding’ or spitting out the hay he is chewing.  He’s a gelding, but he is very fond of female company  …in case he performs for the camera!

Chanelle

Chanelle is the sweetest llama you will ever meet

Darling of The Refirmary, Chanelle wouldn’t say Boo to a goose, but still she gets picked on by the other residents.  Chanelle has more than her fair share of health challenges:  collapsed pasterns (feet), emaciation, arthritis in the neck and blindness in the right eye.  She loves carrots and quiet children and will allow gentle neck massages if she feels safe.

Bella

If you enjoy being ignored, come and spend some time with Bella the llama. She is an expert ignorer

Bella is a retiree.  She was very much loved, but personal misfortune required that she find a new home where she could also receive visits.  If Bella ignores you when you wander through The Sanctuary, don’t be offended.  Bella is aloof and cares not for carrots.  She does care very much about everyone else’s food, which she loves to steal, just because she can.  She lives in The Refirmary because her longtime companion Rico is devoted to her and he needs a lot of special care.

Rico

Rico the llama at The Llama Sanctuary in Tappen, BC

Rico is the lifetime companion of Bella.  He loves her and is absolutely devoted to her.  If she goes off to be by herself, he moans and moans and moans!  We’ve turned the sound off so you don’t think the llamas are all unhappy!  He’s very thin, his feet have collapsed due to a back problem, he has very poor eyesight and ridiculous teeth.  But he can spot a moving carrot from 100 yards!

Saffron

The Spice Girls visit The Llama Sanctuary

Spice Girls Saffron and Juniper came from a ‘petting zoo’ situation and they are loners.  They don’t like being in the main Arena Tribe – too many llamas and they don’t really like people, but the dedication from volunteers is finally winning them around with juicy treats.  They can be quite bossy and thuggish at times, so tell us if they start spitting at Chanelle!

Juniper

Juniper the llama needs to floss before

The other half of The Spice Girls, Juniper frowns a lot and prefers life without the Twolegs interfering.  She MIGHT take the occasional carrot, but she prefers to steal food from another llama.  And yes, she needs to floss!

Gemmy

Gemmy the blind alpaca is now 10 years old and she's a star!

Gemmy was born blind and surrendered to The Llama Sanctuary at 3 days old.  Rejected by her mother and despised by most of the other residents, Gemmy is an absolute favourite with visitors.  She knows her name and she can hear a carrot from 50 yards!  Touch her lips with a treat and she is all yours.  We wanted Gemmy to have a baby, but she seemed to be infertile …until Eddie arrived.  And Eddie was not capable of mating or so we thought.  Now Gemmy has little Harry and she is simply the best mother we have ever known.  Now she has a companion for life.

Eddie

Unsteady Eddie, the crippled alpaca is a daddy!

Unsteady Eddie was arguably in the worst condition we have ever seen when he arrived in 2023  (Watch this video).  He had no interest in life, no friends, crippled legs and barely enough strength to stand.  He was deemed too weak to undergo sedation for castration, but then he didn’t have the strength to mate in any case… so we thought!   Yet here he is 3 years later, absolutely devoted to Gemmy who he fell in love with and now father to Harry.  You will probably see the trio sitting together for a meal under one of the hay feeders.  Yes we do groom him regularly!  His superfine, Suri coat is a magnet to straw!

Harry

Harry was a surprise baby alpaca born to blind Gemmy

Harry was born on May 1st 2026 and the biggest surprise birth in 21 years!  An infertile mother and a father who can barely stand found a way to get together on Gemmy’s birthday.  Nice!  Harry will have a Suri coat like his father, so he’ll need someone caring for him full time I should think.  He has a bit of attitude, so watch out for misbehaving Harry!

Jewel

Llama Jewel is a silent observer at The Llama Sanctuary

Jewel arrived with Moji, her longtime companion, although unusually, they don’t actually like each other.  Jewel has experienced considerable neglect and does not like people.  She’s like Princess and prefers her own company.  She has developed deforming arthritis in the front legs and spends a lot of time in the ICU, which she likes, so you might not see her very much.

Yogi

Yogi is a short and chubby fun-loving llama

Yogi is a fun-loving chubby llama with short deformed legs and playful demeanour.  he drifts in and out of The Refirmary.  From time to time he goes out to spend time with the Arena Tribe, but we prefer to keep a close eye on his crippled legs.  He is usually to be found lurking in front of the water trough or hiding out of the way in a quiet corner somewhere.  Occasionally he gets a game going with PeeGee.

PeeGee

Visitors to The Llama Sanctuary will definitely meet PeeGee - she will ensure that it happens!

This bundle of fluff was 5 weeks old when she was brought to The Llama Sanctuary as an orphan.  Her parents were free to roam wherever they wished and were known by many people.  Sadly, her mother was killed by bears.  PeeGee was extremely underweight when she arrived and the development of glandular abscesses, led us to believe she did not receive colostrum in her first day of life.  After 8 months of daily homeopathy, she has made a great recovery and what a handful! she has become! She loves people; she’s insanely jealous of anyone else receiving attention and she’s too playful for most of The Refirmary residents.  Thankfully, she now has Harry to keep her occupied.  You will see a lot of PeeGee!

Thoreau

Alpha llama Thoreau punctured not one but both of his eyes

Thoreau has only recently entered The Refirmary.  He punctured his right eye, which required attention multiple times a day.  Having recovered his sight in that eye, he recently punctured his left eye.  We don’t believe this to be conincidental, so he needs a lot of observation.  He’s extremely nervous!  He arrived at The Sanctuary as an Alpha male, with several other llamas, following an SPCA intervention.  He’s desperate to return to his girls, but his deteriorating eyesight means he must remain in special care.  He also has NO MOLARS!  He does chew hay briefly with his gums, but he requires extra special feed several times a day.

Boris

Boris the barn cat is seldom seen by visitors to The Llama Sanctuary

Boris the Barn Cat was one of a litter of kittens born to a stray cat in our hay barn one year.  He is very shy of people and usually hides when visitors are around.  You will see him interact with the llamas however.  In the winter he snuggles next to them in the barn.  His nemesis is Mallory, a thuggish and rather overweight all-black cat, who also hangs around The Refirmary most of the day.

Mallory

Mallory the cat is a regular visitor with the llamas

Mallory is not exactly a barn cat, although he spends most of the day in the barn.  He’s all-black and he’s a foodie.  He juggles his time between inspecting the food bowls and harassing Boris and Minnow.  He had a pretty rough life before he came to The Sanctuary, and he racked up considerable vet bills when he arrived as a foster cat.  Due to his past illness, he will remain a Sanctuary cat.

Minnow

Minnow the magnificnet mouser at The Llama Sanctuary

Minnow is the most magnificent mouser that ever there was!  Her dedication to mousing duty has earned her a place at The Llama Sanctuary.  You may see her patrolling the barn or watch the gruesome scene of her dissecting her catch and smacking her lips.  euch!
